Wistron expects revenue from car electronics to double this year. After having partnered up with three Chinese car makers including NIO, Wistron is now looking to gain more tier-1 Japanese OEM partners for new energy cars, according to David Shen, president of Wistron Smart Devices.

Wistron recently has disclosed its subsidiary Wise Cap will fully acquire Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics from LCD maker JDI Taiwan (JDIT), which is a whooly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Japan Display Inc (JDI) for JPY8 billion (US$72.8 million).

Wistron said it expects the acquisition to enhance partnership with JDI for LCD module (LCM) production for car applications.

Shen said acquiring JDIT can help Wistron access its Japanese customers and integrate Wistron's ADAS and ACU system integration with LCD display to develop smart cockpit in future cars.

Shen added that Wistron will keep investing in R&D of self-driving cars and work on integrating its ADAS system and car software.

Of Wistron Group's revenue, 40% comes from notebook and desktop PCs; 30% from servers; and 30% from Wistron Smart Devices which focuses on smartphones, IoT and car electronics.
