I have an ancient dell inspiron 1545 laptop which I want to revive by:
Replacing dead battery.
Adding an SSD as boot drive.
Upgrade ram from 3 gb to 4 gb.
Upgrading Wi-Fi module to dual band (probably)

I'm all clear about where to get all the stuff except for battery.
I used to purchase replacement batteries from ebay India when it was alive, but now not sure whether to buy it locally or online and which particular online store.

Where do you guys purchase your replacement batteries these days?

I also did a little DIY experiment by assembling some old 18550 batteries by soldering them using simple wire and putting in battery case but obviously it failed.
After doing some research I came to know that I'll have to do spot welding using nickel sheets for optimal performance. Dropped the idea since can't procure a spot welding machine.

Usually from Amazon and Flipkart. Usually the battery gives a decent charge for 3 hours when new and lasts for around 2 years plus. It will be a replacement battery and not the original one mostly priced around 2K depending upon the model of the laptop.

I had replaced mine from Dell online for my studio XPS 1645. Got it upgraded from 4 cell to 6 cell. It cost me around 5k. That was in 2015.
Replaced my HP battery with new from HP care.
Have the same model as yours for my aunt who too wants to replace her battery.

My Dell Inspiron is running on 2nd replacement battery, both bought from Amazon.
They cost around 2000, gives 2-3 hrs backup and works for 2 to 3 years depending on your usage pattern.

I was able to find the battery for the cheapest on tpstech:

Not ordering as of now, waiting till prime day sale, maybe I can find it cheaper on Amazon.

Also having some diy ideas in mind, thinking of purchasing 6 cells of 18650 type of some okayish brand and replacing existing battery cells with them.

In my experience the replacement batteries I purchased online did not perform even upto 50 % of the original battery .
Buy the battery being aware of this situation , unless you buy directly from the manufacturer which is highly recommended .

I have an Acer Laptop (Travelmate P643M), tried purchasing batteries from 2 separate sellers online. Both batteries fitted perfectly and were able to Power the laptop, however they were not able to charge (Status would say Plugged in, Not Charging). Have given up on being able to find a replacement battery online now.

Spot welding required not soldering . AFAIK .
I did a kind of PoC myself before deciding on going with soldering, and it worked.
And anyways if that doesn't workout, I'll use those cells for some other diy project.

Update: I replaced the cells in the battery with cells from old dead batteries, and when putting the battery into laptop, it showed 26 percent and the charge kept decreasing without increasing while on adaptor.
I thought the issue could be in adaptor itself, and I was right.
The adaptor cable was faulty, got it changed for 200 bucks. and now it's charging.

Will try to cancel my order of lithium batteries from compoindia.
