Leader of opposition in the Bengal Assembly and the BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday blamed the overconfidence of party’s several leaders for BJP’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections concluded on May 2.
Speaking at the party meeting in Chandipur area of Purba Medinipur district, Adhikari said the BJP lost because of several leaders’ overconfidence that the party would get over 170 seats. However, the party leaders set targets, but did not work towards achieving them, Adhikari said.
The BJP did well in the first two phases of West Assembly polls following which several BJP leaders became smug and overconfident and believing that the BJP will secure 170-180 seats in the elections, but they did not do the groundwork. Blaming the party’s poor ground work during Bengal polls, he said continuing ground work was equally important as setting up targets, which was realistic but needed hard work.
The BJP had managed to secure win 77 seats in the West Bengal elections held in April-May this year while Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress came to power for a third consecutive term winning 213 of the 294 seats. The Trinamool Congress secured win despite a high-profile campaign from the BJP that saw several top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, making repeated claims that the BJP would win over 200 seats.
A trusted lieutenant of Banerjee, Suvebdu Adhikari, who had joined the BJP months ahead of the Bengal pols, however, could flaunt a personal success as he defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency.

Meanwhile, reacting to Adhikari’s comment on Sunday, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh accused him of living in a fool’s paradise asking why is he finding fault with others? He also accused Adhikari for not knowing the pulse of Bengal, Trinamool does. The Trinamool Congress leader credited social welfare projects introduced by Banerjee for the party’s win in the elections.
