TN CM M.K Stalin says "talks no longer an option" on Medekatu reservoir row with Karnataka

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday ruled out the option of holding talks with Karnataka on the Mekedatu dam issue. Stalin told reporters after meeting President Ram Nath Kovind in the national capital that based on the assurances given by the Center, his government is confident that Karnataka cannot go ahead with this initiative and legal options will also be taken on the dam issue.

Stalin said the Tamil Nadu government has decided to celebrate the centenary of the Legislative Assembly established in 1921. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, then known as the `Madras Legislative Council`, was elected by the then Madras Presidency. The Chief Minister said that he requested the President to preside over the centenary celebrations, which he accepted. Stalin said the portrait of former chief minister M Karunanidhi would also be unveiled in the assembly during the ceremony.

On being asked about Karnataka pressurizing the Center over the Mekedatu dam issue, Stalin said he had spoken to the Prime Minister recently to take steps against the neighbouring state building a reservoir on the Cauvery river.

Stalin said his government was confident that Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa`s initiative would not go ahead after assurances were given by the Prime Minister and the Jal Shakti Minister.

He said, “The matter is also pending in the Supreme Court. We will face it legally." Asked whether the Tamil Nadu government would talk to Karnataka on the Mekedatu issue, Stalin said, "Talks are no longer an option, it has been made clear by our (Water Resources) Minister."
