“Population is a national issue and is not aimed at any particular religion. However, sometimes people do link it with a particular religion and it is part of our campaign to remove doubts and misconceptions, for which we keep holding workshops from time to time, with the most recent one being held in Ghaziabad,” Manch’s national convenor Shahid Akhtar told ET.

RSS-backed Muslim Rashtriya Manch has begun an awareness drive on UP’s proposed population control bill, the first draft of which has been released by the state law commission for comments from the public.

Akhtar said another meeting of the core committee is scheduled in August, where UP elections will be the talking point.

“There are some orthodox Muslims who have opposed the provisions in the draft — some of them also have a political bent of mind. We have always stood for any legislation that is in the nation’s interest,” Manch’s Awadh region incharge Anil Singh told ET.
