Seoul, South Korea
Samsung SDI Co,
an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, plans to build a battery cell plant in the
United States. The move is to support the auto industry's shift to
electrification, per a company source with knowledge about the matter.
As per the
source, the South Korean battery maker is in talks with automakers to supply
batteries manufactured at its potential U.S. factory. The company might invest
$2.62 billion to manufacture batteries for Stellantis and a minimum of $870
million for batteries to Ford Motor-backed electric vehicle start-up Rivian.
The source
further added that Samsung SDI had not finalised if the plant will be an
independent manufacturing site or a joint venture with carmakers.
Samsung SDI has
EV battery plants in South Korea, China and Hungary to supply batteries to BMW,
Ford, Volvo, and Volkswagen. Its domestic rivals LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation Co Ltd already announced plans
to manufacture EV battery cells in the U.S.
