Captain should refrain from defaming farmers : Bhagwant Mann

Chandigarh, Jul 17 (UNI) Slamming Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on his statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should talk to the farmer leaders to end the farmers' stir, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab unit president and MP Bhagwant Mann said that every step that Captain Amarinder had taken, point to the fact that he had always been trying to 'derail' the farmers' movement.
Mr Mann's remark comes a day after the Punjab Chief Minister wrote a letter to the Prime Minister and urged him to hold talks with the protesting farmers amid growing cross-border terror threats ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
Captain Amarinder Singh has also proposed to lead an all-party meet to hold talks with the protesting farmers, said a statement issued by the Punjab Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Friday.
In a statement here on Saturday, Mr Mann said that Capt Amarinder Singh had never once directly told PM Modi that these farm laws were wrong and should be repealed in the interest of the farmers’ but had been making such statements to suppress the movement.
''Both Captain and Modi were hand in glove and were working to suppress the farmers' movement by opting various tactics and maneuver, he alleged.
''Why is Captain Amarinder Singh blaming the farmers when there is no connection between the farmers' movement and cross border terrorism?'' he added.
The AAP MP said that in fact, Capt Amarinder Singh was trying to create a rift between the farmers and the common man by intimidating the people of Punjab in the name of extremism.
Taking a dig at Capt Amarinder Singh, he said, ''If half of the number of rounds that Captain Amarinder Singh has made to save his seat in the Delhi Darbar, would have been made to Modi, then the issue of the farmers could have been resolved.''
He alleged that Captain Amarinder had always ''stabbed'' the farmers of Punjab in the back.
Mr Mann said that Captain Amarunder was playing poor politics just to garner good self in regard with the ongoing farmers' movement, while in reality he can go to any length to 'torpedo' the farmers' movement.
He said that the AAP has been raising the voice of the farmers from the very beginning and the issues of the farmers would be raised loudly during the upcoming session of Parliament.
