Married man and friend beaten to death by his girlfriend’s father, 8 others in Pune: Police

A married man and his friend were beaten to death at a hotel in Karanjvihire village in Khed taluka of Pune district, allegedly over his affair with the daughter of one of the assailants.

Police have identified the deceased as Balu Gavade (32) and Rahul Gavade (20), both residents of Thakar Vasti in Askhed Khurd village in Khed taluka.

Police have arrested nine persons in this case, including the girl’s father Balu alias Appa Margaj (45), Lalita Margaj (35), Prasad Margaj (20), Abhishek Margaj (19), Ananda Jadhav (32), Chandrakala alias Mukta alu Gavade (25), Raju Gavade (43), Anil Kadale (21), and Kiran Mengal (21), all residents of Karanjvihire village.

Police said Balu was married and had two children. He used to work in a brick kiln owned by Balu Margaj, who also runs a hotel in Karanjvihire. Balu fell in love with Margaj’s daughter and probe revealed that two days ago, the couple ran away with the help of Balu’s friend Rahul.

Margaj launched a search and managed to track them down on July 16. He and his aides brought Balu, Rahul and his daughter to his hotel in Karanjvihire village.

Margaj and the other eight accused allegedly thrashed Balu and Rahul with iron rods and wooden battens, killing them. The accused also allegedly beat up Margaj’s daughter, leaving her injured. Police said the girl has been admitted to a hospital in Chakan for treatment.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Krishna Prakash said, “The victim, who ran away with the girl, was married and had children. The girl’s family had opposed this affair. We are investigating the case further.”

According to police, the accused were arrested within four hours of the incident coming to light.
