Odisha: Body cameras for prison staff, metal detectors in jails soon

A pilot project has been approved by the government for procurement of 20 body worn cameras for staff, 10 each for Choudwar and Jharpada jails in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
BHUBANESWAR: To strengthen the security systems in jails and streamline their management, the state government has decided to provide body cameras to prison officials and procure latest gadgets, including deep search metal detectors, to trace hidden mobile phones in the cells of inmates.
"As mandated under strategic renovation and implementation of technology, we submitted a comprehensive proposal to the government to incorporate the 5T model in prisons. The government has approved our action plan for 2021-22," director general of police (prisons and correctional services) Santosh Upadhyay said.
He said deep search metal detectors will be procured for all circle and district jails. This will help in detection of concealed mobile phones, chargers, SIM cards and other contrabands that are prohibited in jails.
A pilot project has been approved by the government for procurement of 20 body worn cameras for staff, 10 each for Choudwar and Jharpada jails in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. In the subsequent phases, the body worn cameras will be supplied to other jails. The body worn cameras will keep a watch on the activities of notorious criminals and suspects inside the prisons.
