KOZHIKODE: Demonstrating their share of commitment in creating awareness against dowry in marriages, police personnel in the city on Saturday took a mass oath against the social evil, which had led to a series of deaths in Kerala.
The city police commissioner A V George read out the oath at a function held at the Calicut beach.
"The oath-taking was part of creating awareness among people against dowry menace.
All parents should record all communication with respect to the marriage of their ward in some gadget so that it can be used as an evidence in the event of any unfortunate incidents", the commissioner suggested.
Besides around 100 police officials participating in the oath taking function, personnel at police stations also took the pledge against demanding and giving dowry.
Kerala had witnessed a series of dowry related deaths recently, following which state Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, had undertaken a dawn-to-dusk fast to create awareness against the social evil.
In view of increasing complaints of dowry harassment reported in the state, the Kerala government has amended its Dowry Prohibition Rules to appoint 'dowry prohibition officers' in all 14 districts as part of taking stringent measures against the menace.
The post of dowry prohibition officers, which had already existed on a regional basis in three districts- Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode, has now been expanded to all districts.
The district women and child development officers would act as dowry prohibition officer in each district, Health minister, Veena George had said.
