After skipper Tamim Iqbal’s wicket, Bangladesh lost their all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the ninth over. Although Shakib started well, he failed to capitalise on the momentum and gave a catch to Ryan Burl off a Muzarabani delivery. While wickets kept tumbling at the other end, Liton Das continued to pile runs and reached his fourth ODI century clipping a Wesley Madhevere delivery in the 40th over to reach his milestone.
Richard Ngarava struck for Zimbabwe when it was needed the most as Liton Das perished trying to accelerate the innings. The opener tried to hook a short ball outside off stump only to pull it off the bottom of the bat straight down to substitute Wellington Masakadza at backward square.
Afif Hossain playing only in his fifth ODI, assumed responsibility as a finisher as he along with Mehidy Hasan took Bangladesh past 250. Hossain kept rotating strike before taking Luke Jongwe and Richard Ngarava to the cleaners to add impetus to the innings. Luke Jongwe then got them both out off successive deliveries, but the damage was done and Bangladesh set the hosts a target of 277 to win the first ODI.
