Twitter is now rolling out captions for voice tweets, a feature for which it was heavily criticized before. Twitter has announced the rollout of the new feature via a tweet from Twitter Support. A short video clip demoing the feature can also be seen in the tweet.

To listen to a voice tweet, one just has to just click on the “CC” icon provided on the top-right corner of the voice tweet.

Currently, the voice tweets are only available to iOS users, so Android users will not able to make any voice tweets for now. However, iOS users do not have to make any extra efforts to add captions to their voice tweets. The transcriptions happen automatically in supported languages, such as English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, French, Indonesian, Korean, and Italian.

According to TheVerge that has reportedly talked to Twitter, captions will only be visible on new voice tweets, so a voice tweet made in the past will not support this feature.

Back in September 2020, Twitter Support tweeted that transcription for audio and video is part of its larger plan to make Twitter accessible for everyone across all features. So, now that the support is rolled out for the voice tweets, we believe it will be launched for videos posted in the tweets soon as well.

Twitter’s head of global accessibility Gurpreet Kaur has reportedly said in a statement,

As part of our ongoing work to make Twitter accessible for everyone, we’re rolling out automated captions for Voice Tweets to iOS. Though it’s still early and we know it won’t be perfect at first, it’s one of many steps we’re taking to expand and strengthen accessibility across our service, and we look forward to continuing our journey to create a truly inclusive service.
