Ganj Basoda accident: Rescue mission underway

Vidisha, MP, July 15 (UNI) An unspecified number of people are feared trapped as a rescue and relief operation continues late into the night, in Lal Pathaar area on the outskirts of Ganj Basoda tehsil headquarters, following an alert that at least two-dozen villagers fell into an approximately 30-ft-deep well when the underground structure’s cement roof – partially covering it – collapsed and a net gave way while the locals were attempting to bring out a minor.
By 2200 hrs, more than a dozen were rescued and rushed to an infirmary in the town. The mission was affected after some team members and machinery also fell into roughly 20-ft-deep water when soil collapsed. Until 2300 hrs, the exact number of such victims and how many are trapped were both unclear.

Law-enforcement authorities said that initially teenager Sandeep Parihar fell in while drawing water. Subsequent to the disaster; lighting, an excavator, a tractor, etc were arranged. The Fire Brigade was draining the well.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan – who was busy here in connection with the marriage of his three foster daughters Radha, Preeti and Suman – was galvanised into action and has ordered an inquiry.
“In compliance with my directive, the Collector (Mr Pankaj Jain) and the Superintendent of Police (Mr Vinayak Verma) reached the spot. I have spoken with the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police and the DG, State Disaster Response Force. The Divisional Commissioner and the Inspector General are also on alert. A National Disaster Response Force team has reached the scene besides District In-charge Minister Vishvas Sarang,” the veteran leader told members of the Fourth Estate.

Unconfirmed sources claimed that at least 40 people fell into the well.
