Akron, Ohio

With the help of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), Goodyear has developed airless tyre and wheel assembly to support autonomous vehicle transportation. Goodyear is one of the world's largest tyre companies and has a presence in 23 countries worldwide.

An Olli shuttle supported by the NPT has been tested at Goodyear testing facilities and other locations by Goodyear and Local Motors. The performance targets have been set regarding speed, durability, and load. This testing phase is going to reveal more about non-pneumatic tires, airless tyres which are sustainable, long-lasting, and maintenance-free. It is also believed that Goodyear and Local Motors will gather experiential data from the JTA, looking for viewpoints on ride comfort, noise, and other variables.

According to Michael Rachita, Senior Program Manager, Goodyear, with the evolution in mobility, the tire can be transformed in the way they move. Also, in the emerging autonomous transportation environment, alternative airless architectures are ideal. She also added that as the company is looking for advanced mobility, this is going to be an important milestone. The company is hoping to introduce the first completely sustainable and maintenance-free tires by the end of the decade.

According to Nathaniel P. Ford, CEO, JTA, the authority is proud to integrate this sustainable and innovative technology into Autonomous Vehicle Test & Learn program for developing the future of mobility through the Ultimate Urban Circulator. He also said that this is a perfect example of how Jacksonville has become the master of the public transportation industry by developing AV mobility solutions.

According to Vikrant Aggarwal, CEO, Local Motors, Olli, the autonomous vehicle, needs to decrease maintenance costs and perform reliably. He also said that the non-pneumatic tires by Goodyear are designed in such a way that they will give less worry to the team regarding giving passengers a quiet and consistent ride. He believes that non-pneumatic tires are going to be the next industry standard in the coming years.
