Married police officer, 60, admits stalking his lover of four years after falsely accusing her of drink-driving and breaking Covid laws in campaign that forced her to put house up for sale

A married police officer has admitted stalking his former lover after falsely reporting her for breaking Covid-19 rules and getting colleagues to stake out her new partner's address.

Stephen Green, 60, also convinced a man to report his ex and her new partner for a drink-driving offence, Dudley Magistrates Court heard.

The officer, from West Mercia Police, admitted a single charge of stalking involving serious alarm or distress on July 8, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Between November 1 last year and January 9 2021, Green, from Shropshire, terrorised his victim to the point where she felt compelled to sell her house and move back in with her mother.

While stalking his victim over the three month period, Green sent her messages and arranged for a bouquet to be sent to her.

Green, who was married with children, had embarked on a four-year affair with the woman, which ended in August 2020.

But the police officer, who was based at Shrewsbury police station, began stalking her after she started a new relationship, even arranging for a riot van to check out the victim's home address.

Meanwhile he plotted to have his ex and her new partner falsely reported for a drink-driving offence by a third party.

He also instructed police officers to carry out checks at her home and made two false reports of Covid breaches using fake personal details.

Fiona Cortese, from the CPS, said: 'Police officers are trusted to uphold the law, yet Green broke the law to cause serious distress and anxiety to a woman who had moved on with her life after their break-up.

'He abused his position to access and use resources that members of the public would not have access to.'

She added: 'His guilty plea came following an investigation by the police, a detailed review by the Crown Prosecution Service which led to further evidence being requested and obtained.

'When the case was presented to the court, the evidence against Green was overwhelming and resulted in an early guilty plea being entered.'

Green was charged in May and has since resigned from the police force according to prosecutors.

Chief Inspector Helen Wain, of West Mercia Police's professional standards department, said: 'We are aware that Stephen Green, who was a West Mercia Police officer, has pleaded guilty to a stalking offence.

'The officer has since resigned from the force.

'A review will now take place in relation to misconduct matters.'

Green, whose rank and position was not made known, will be sentenced next month.
