JORHAT: The rise of Covid-19 cases in upper Assam’s Jorhat and Golaghat districts continued unabated on Wednesday, forcing the Jorhat district administration to order total lockdown on Wednesday and Thursday while Golaghat district administration ordered closure of all grocery shops and other retail shops till Thursday.
Golaghat deputy commissioner Mrigesh Narayan Baruah, in an order issued on Wednesday, said, “In view of containing the spread of Covid-19 positive cases in Golaghat district and to stop the spread of the disease, all grocery shops, retail shops, vegetable and fruit vendors will remain closed for another day on Thursday in the entire district. However, this order will not be applicable for pharmacy and milk vending points.”
Baruah added that the situation will be reviewed on Thursday to decide the next course of action. Jorhat and Golaghat district was declared as ‘total containment zones’ by the government on July 6 and total lockdown was in force from July 7. Only the grocery shops, vegetables and fruits stalls were allowed to open in these two districts but due to the rise of Covid positive cases, the administration of both the district ordered closure of these shops from July 12.
Meanwhile, amidst total lockdown in the northern Assam’s Biswanath district from Monday, police and paramilitary forces conducted flag march at Gahpur in the district to enforce Covid norms on Wednesday. Superintendent of Police (Biswanath) Ripul Das said, “We have conducted a joint flag march at Gahpur today (Wednesday) to enforce Covid norms. A large number of people have been detained and fined for flouting the norms in Biswanath district.”
