Karnataka: Panchayat makes man who dumped waste to clear it

MANGALURU: Kinya gram panchayat made sure that a person who allegedly dumped waste in the panchayat limits, cleared it too. The panchayat is located near the Talapady border and next to the highway.
Panchayat development officer (PDO) Vishwanath Bailamoole told TOI, during the last six months, teams have been formed comprising panchayat members, officials and the public to keep a tab on miscreants dumping waste in public places within panchayat limits. Vaditwaiba and Sankesha junction had turned into favourite waste dumping spots. However, in the last six months, there has been a 90% decline in miscreants dumping waste in public due to their constant watch, he said.
On Sunday, a local spotted a man arriving on a two-wheeler and dumping a gunny bag full of waste near Sankesha Junction. When stopped, the man identified as Badruddin Irfan, reportedly scolded the local person and prevented him from taking pictures. However, the person managed to take a picture of his vehicle.
On Tuesday, a complaint was filed at the Ullal police station. The police managed to trace the owner. A collective decision was taken by the local body and he was slapped a fine of Rs 1,000. Based on the panchayat directions, he cleaned the place and gave the panchayat an undertaking that he would not repeat the act and would inform about such incidents in the future, the PDO said.
Case against litterbug
Karkala police have registered a case against a litterbug for dumping bags of garbage below Miyar bridge on a complaint filed by Team Swachh Karkala Brigade. Around 9.30pm on Saturday, a person travelling in a goods vehicle was seen dumping four-five bags of garbage in the flowing river beneath the Miyar bridge on NH 169.
In April, Team Swachh Karkala Brigade as part of their 70th Weekly clean-up programme along with other teams cleaned and cleared nearly 2000 kg of garbage dumped on the riverbed underneath Miyar bridge.
