NEW DELHI: Amid infighting in the
Congress Punjab unit, the party leadership is working out a formula for chief minister Amarinder
Singh and Navjot Singh
Sidhu to work together.
AICC general secretary in-charge for Punjab affairs of the party Harish
Rawat said Singh will continue as chief minister when the next assembly elections are fought. "We are working out a formula where both the chief minister and Sidhu could work together," he told reporters.
The formula has been devised after the meeting with
Rahul Gandhi,
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and poll strategist Prashant Kishor, as per the sources.
Rawat said it may take some time but to balance the equation in the state, the party is working on the formula to appoint Sidhu in a prominent position, while asserting that
Amarinder Singh has already said that he will abide by the high command's decision.
As per sources,
Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to get the post of party's state head with two working presidents in his team, and Amarinder Singh will lead the party into the elections. However, there is no official announcement that has been made so far.
The official announcement is going to be made soon.
Both Sidhu and Singh have been at loggerheads with each other and have made public statements against each other, prompting the party to set up a three-member panel headed by Mallikarjun Kharge to end factionalism.
The sources said that the Punjab Congress could have two working presidents too, in a bid to accommodate all sections, regions, religions and castes.
The party will announce a major revamp in Punjab in the next few days which may see a new PCC chief.
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has taken up arms against Amarinder Singh, had met party General Secretary
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi in the recent past.
A three-member committee headed by senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge, set up to resolve the issues, had submitted its report. Amarinder Singh and Sidhu, among other state leaders, had also met the committee members.
