Fred IT leverages Twilio’s Programmable Messaging API and Twilio Studio to provide electronic prescriptions to millions of Australians.
Electronic prescriptions, or ePrescriptions, allows patients who have registered for My Script List (MySL) to order their prescriptions on local pharmacies via WhatsApp.
This innovation makes it easier for them to manage their ePrescriptions, and safer for healthcare professionals and patients during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Fred IT wanted to legalise electronic prescriptions and eschew paper. To do this, it needed to build a new system, which would traditionally take approximately six months.
Instead, Fred IT implemented Twilio’s Programmable Messaging API, which accelerated the process—from six months to eight weeks amidst a global pandemic.
Twilio’s solutions are programmable versus out-of-the box, which gave Fred IT the opportunity to build on to Twilio’s Platform.
This was an important factor when Fred IT was evaluating vendor partners because an out-of-the box solution would not have allowed its tech team to easily and safely develop the right system. Twilio’s APIs were able to integrate with Fred IT’s system in a way no other vendor could.
“Fred IT’s electronic prescription service will empower doctors and pharmacists to leverage technological innovation to provide a safer and more convenient solution to millions of Australians, wherever they are,” Twilio regional vice president ANZ Kristen Pimpini.
Prior to the pandemic, Fred IT says its eRx Script Exchange was already being used by Australian doctors and pharmacists, and had provided over 30,000 users transmissions. Today, eRX is being used by 21,000 doctors and 95% of pharmacies in Australia, and has provided over eleven million digital prescriptions.
“Our integration with Twilio has been part of what enabled us to increase the number of user transmissions, even amidst the pandemic driving greater demand for prescriptions,” Fred IT founder and CEO Paul Naismith says.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Twilio to offer groundbreaking technology solutions to support different workflows, including ePrescribing and consent process,” concludes Naismith. “As demand continues to grow, scalability with messaging services to support our future volume growth has been easier than ever. Twilio has allowed us to grow at scale, fast, meeting consumer expectations and changing behaviours.”
Naismith says Fred IT also launched a WhatsApp integration capability, which provides prescriptions and meeting our customers where they are communicating.
My Script List will work alongside the existing token workflows to provide patient with flexibility in how they digitally access their medications.
