Last year, 62,100 new cases of cancer were reported in India from drinking alcohol. This truth was revealed in a study published in the journal Lancet Oncology. It also showed that the number of drinkers in the country is increasing. Researchers found that alcohol was the cause of 740,000 or four percent of the total cancer cases reported globally in 2020.

The study, conducted globally, found that the number of women who were vulnerable to cancer due to drinking alcohol was much lower than men. In males, 77 percent (568,700) cases were related to alcohol consumption, while 23 percent (172,600) cases were reported among women.

Researchers have stressed the need to spread wider awareness about the link between alcohol and cancer. According to the study, drinking alcohol increases the production of harmful chemicals in the body, which damages DNA and affects hormone production. It can be helpful in the development of cancer.
