Sunderland (UK)
Nissan has
announced its plan to invest £1 billion at its Sunderland facility to develop a
new Gigafactory, produce a new all-electric crossover and get 100% renewable
energy from a new microgrid. These steps are taken towards electrification of
Nissan’s line-up and to achieve carbon neutrality.
With a massive
£450 million investment, a new Gigafactory or 9GWh plant will be built on the
International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP), adjacent to the Nissan plant.
It will bring down the cost of EV batteries and produce Gen 5 battery cells
that are 30% denser and with a better range.
Another £423
million will be used to produce a new all-electric crossover called EV36Zero.
Nissan will partner with Envision AESC for it. The new vehicle will be built on
the Alliance CMF-EV platform, designed and developed by Nissan in collaboration with Renault, for
global markets.
The Sunderland
City Council will provide a 100% renewable microgrid that will help save 55,000
tonnes of carbon annually. The existing 10 solar farms producing 132MW of
energy and other wind farms of Nissan will be incorporated. Nissan is expected
to spend £80 million on this project and use second-life batteries for storing
up to 1MW generated during the day.
