MUMBAI: Isolated heavy rain was recorded in parts of Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan on Tuesday morning, leading to the
IMD to upgrade its alert from yellow to orange, and issue a red alert for Palghar, Raigad.
A yellow alert indicates heavy rain at isolated places and orange indicates heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places being very likely.
In the 12-hour period ending 8.30pm on Tuesday, IMD Colaba observatory recorded 59.4mm of rain and IMD Santacruz 54.6mm. According to IMD’s five-day forecast, heavy rain activity is expected to continue till Friday. “A low pressure area lies over
Saurashtra coast and neighbourhood and an east-west shear zone runs in middle levels across central India and strong westerly winds are prevailing along the west coast. Under these conditions, isolated extremely heavy falls are very likely over Konkan and Goa during July 13-15,” said IMD.
However, the lakes that supply potable water to Mumbai did not receive much rain. The total water stock stands at 2.5 lakh mi-llion litres or 17% of the total required stock. On July 13, 2020, the total water stock was 3.39 lakh million litres.
