Supreme Court issues notice to Yogi government on allowing Kanwar Yatra amid Covid-19 pandemic

The bench said that it read the disturbing news that the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to allow the Kanwar Yatra, while Uttarakhand has shown foresight not to allow it.

The concern of health experts, central government and Supreme Court is increasing regarding the possibility of a third wave of Covid-19.

The Supreme Court is concerned about the Uttar Pradesh government`s permission for Kanwar Yatra amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The court took suo moto cognizance of the matter on Wednesday. A bench headed by Justice RF Nariman has issued notices to the Central Government and the UP Government. The matter will come up for hearing on Friday. The court also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s remarks on the third wave. The court said that the PM had said that `we cannot compromise at all`.

The bench said that it read the disturbing news that the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to allow the Kanwar Yatra, while Uttarakhand has shown foresight not to allow it. People do not understand what is happening. This is happening despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s warning about the third wave of Covid-19.

Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday allowed the yatra from July 25, despite the threat of a possible third wave of Covid-19.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed the officers to ensure smooth completion of the Kanwar Yatra, In his instructions, CM Yogi has asked the officials to issue guidelines in consultation with the neighbouring states of Uttarakhand and the Bihar government.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand has announced to ban Kanwar Yatra for the second year in a row.
