Former ‘Bachelor’ Ben Higgins: Faith will get me through my breakdown

Ben Higgins is relying on his faith in Jesus to get him through a breakdown.

The former “Bachelor” — who recently moved back home to Indiana to deal with his personal issues — said his Christian upbringing helps him during the toughest moments of his life.

“I believe Jesus’ truth. When I cry out to Jesus, in the moments I need Jesus the most, God has always shown up, and not only that, in my biggest moments of doubt,” Higgins told The Salvation Army’s Midland Division.

“The point to me that always makes sense is Jesus gave his one clearest commandment: love your God and love your neighbor. Through my life, sometimes that’s the only that makes sense or fits. If I do that well, I also understand there is a God that loves, life seems to click.”

Higgins admitted to Trista Sutter on her “Better, Etc.” podcast last week that he’d moved back to Indiana because of a “breakdown,” and that he didn’t know “what this next season of life looks like” as he found himself further removed from the reality TV show that put him on the map.

His candid admission came after he revealed in March that he’d secretly battled a painkiller addiction, which he told The Salvation Army was a result of loneliness.

“People only were giving me attention now in my life because of my experience on a show,” he explained. “That honestly felt like it was diminishing a lot of my life and a lot of things I was pursuing because I was getting attention for being on a show.

“Now, I’m sitting in a place where I’m in a transition phase,” he continued. “I’m still there, I don’t want to tell you I’m not, where I’m looking to see what does life look like, maybe when the attention wanes and even if it continues, with all those factors and what is my role in that as a person.”

While he recovers from his breakdown, Higgins is enjoying spending time with his fiancée, Jessica Clarke, who is also religious.

“Jessica is somebody who desperately desires to love people well, love God well and, as a result, love me well,” Higgins said. “She’s not only my biggest fan but biggest supporter and most healthy critic. I believe it’s going to last a lifetime because she makes me a better man.”
