NEW DELHI:
Union minister Piyush Goyal will replace Thawar Chand Gehlot as the leader of
house in the Rajya Sabha.
Goyal was the deputy leader when Gehlot, who has been appointed as governor of Karnataka, was the leader.
Confirming the development, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi extended greetings to Goyal.
“Congratulations to @PiyushGoyal ji on being appointed the Leader of House in Rajya Sabha.
He has been entrusted by PM @NarendraModi ji with key responsibility. Wishing him continued vigour in the service to the nation,” Joshi tweeted soon after reports came in that the
parliamentary affairs ministry has sent its recommendation in this regard to the
Rajya Sabha secretariat.
Goyal, a two-time Rajya Sabha MP, was the deputy leader of the
NDA and is also Union Minister in the
Cabinet.
He is holding the charge of various ministries, including commerce and industry, food and consumer affairs, and textiles.
Prior to becoming a minister in 2014, Goyal was the treasurer of the party. He was also engaged by the
BJP in poll management activities and for managing logistics during the election.
