Petrol prices in Delhi have surged nearly Rs 32 since April last year to an all-time high now, while the diesel prices have risen nearly Rs 24.5 in the same period. Petrol prices have already crossed the Rs 100-mark across the country.
Petrol was at Rs 69.59 a litre at the start of last fiscal year on April 1, 2020 in Delhi and it ended the fiscal year at Rs 90.56 a litre on March 31 this year, registering a surge of 30.13 per cent in the entire fiscal year. Continuing its rising trend, the petrol prices have already risen Rs 10.63 a litre in Delhi in three and half months of the current fiscal from a level of Rs 90.56 a litre on April 1 to Rs 101.19 on July 14 in Delhi.
In comparison to petrol, diesel prices have risen a little slower due to cut in VAT in several states. In terms of price hike, diesel prices in the last fiscal jumped Rs 18.58 per litre from Rs 62.29 a litre on April 1, 2020 to Rs 80.87 a litre on March 31, 2021, a growth of 29.83 per cent in Delhi.
In Mumbai, the hike in diesel prices have been sharper in FY21. It rose Rs 21.75 per litre from Rs 66.21 a litre last year to Rs 87.96 a litre in March this year.
In the current fiscal, diesel has risen Rs 8.85 in Delhi from Rs 80.87 on April 1 to Rs 89.72 now. In Mumbai, the fuel has risen by Rs 9.33 per litre to Rs 97.29 a litre now. The fuel is most expensive in Mumbai among all the metros.
Consumers in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have experienced a sharper rise in fuel prices due to higher local duties on petrol and diesel in these states.
A sharp surge in fuel prices is largely due to higher crude oil prices in the global markets. Global crude oil prices are hovering around $75 a barrel, the level last seen nearly two years ago.
