To deal with overcrowding at Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail, the state prisons department has proposed a multi-storey prison on the lines of some correctional facilities in US, said state prison department chief Sunil Ramanand on Tuesday.

Ramanand said the new prison would accommodate around 5,000 inmates. It can be recalled that in January, the then Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh had announced that a proposal was under consideration to construct multiple new jails with modern amenities to ease the burden on existing prisons.

“At present, Arthur Road Jail is crowded and there is no scope for further expansion. In view of the prison population, there is an urgent need to build another facility in Mumbai. But there is a constraint of land availability. We are planning to build a multi-storey prison in Mumbai on the lines of a correctional facility at Miami in USA,” said Ramanand, adding that land had also been identified for this purpose.

“The proposed prison will house around 5,000 undertrial inmates and would considerably ease the burden on Arthur Road Jail,” he said similar proposals were under consideration for Pune, Hingoli, Palghar and Gondia.
