Former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Yashpal Sharma passed away on Tuesday.

Sharma, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest was 66 years old. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

"Yes, Yashpal is no more with us. We just received the information from his family," a former India team-mate of Sharma, told PTI.

Sharma also served as a national selector and was part of the team that picked the 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

Sharma, who represented India in 37 Tests, scored 1606 runs with two centuries and nine half-centuries. In 42 ODIs, he scored 883 runs with four half-centuries.

In Ranji Trophy, where he represented three teams - Punjab, Haryana and Railways -, Sharma played 160 matches amassing 8,933 runs which included 21 centuries with a highest score of an unbeaten 201.

Former India off-spinner and former BCCI President N. Shivlal Yadav expressed shock at the demise of Sharma.

"I couldn't believe it. I am deeply saddened. He was my roommate in two series. Such a wonderful person, always tried to boost the morale of his team-mates," Shivlal told Sportstar.

"Obviously, being the 1983 World Cup-winning team member was the high point of his career. But, I always felt he never really played to his full potential, he was such a wonderful stroke maker and a fantastic fielder. It is a huge loss especially when he had so much to give back to the sport," Shivlal said.
