Database vendor MongoDB has announced MongoDB 5.0 with native time series support, along with improvements to MongoDB Atlas, Atlas Search, Atlas Data Lake, and Realm.

MongoDB 5.0 introduces native time series collections, clustered indexing, and window functions; live resharding; the Versioned API (to help decouple application and database lifecycles); and multi-cloud privacy controls (including client-side field level encryption).

In addition, Atlas Search now includes function scoring, MongoDB Realm supports the Unity game engine (with Kotlin Multiplatform and Flutter/Dart SDKs are now in alpha testing), and MongoDB Charts is now integrated with Atlas Data Lake.

"MongoDB is the world's pre-eminent application data platform for building the applications of today and tomorrow," said MongoDB president and CEO Dev Ittycheria.

"With the end of the global pandemic in sight, enterprises everywhere feel a sense of urgency to use software and data as a competitive advantage. The best way to do this is by giving developers access to technologies that align to the way they think and code to enable high productivity.

"Today's announcements remove even more friction and complexity from the developer experience and enable developers to build innovative and highly scalable applications for a wide range of use cases faster than on any other platform. MongoDB is incredibly popular among developers everywhere, and is used by nearly 27,000 customers around the world to transform their businesses."

Not-for-profit ticketing platform Humanitix's CEO Ryan O'Connell said "Being in the business of event ticketing, we had no other choice when the pandemic hit but to change our operations and go fully online, very quickly. MongoDB has been a key driver of change and innovation for Humanitix.

"Our business model aims to transform ticketing fees into education programs for disadvantaged children. We've been assessed as being able to turn $1 million investment into $40 million for charity, and we see MongoDB as integral to providing that 40x multiplier. Without MongoDB products our developer team, which comprises just a handful of people, would find it much harder to achieve what it does."

"In the midst of the pandemic, we were able to create, set up and launch our Virtual Event Hub, all in under 10 days. MongoDB was also instrumental in helping us scale and release a new mobile app. We launched new functionalities as event venues as they started to open up again, and were able to expand our operations into New Zealand."

O'Connell added that the new features of MongoDB were invaluable, helping to release new features and products swiftly and making the developer team more productive than ever."

MongoDB ANZ regional vice president Jeremy Powers said "The pandemic has shown us that it is critical for organisations to have the tools to create and release new products and services quickly. They need the freedom to scale up and down with ease, and overall be resilient in the face of change.

"More companies across Australia and New Zealand want tools that empower their developers to use data in order to build competitive advantage, drive innovation and future-proof applications.

"MongoDB now has over 900 customers in ANZ including Woolworths, Macquarie, and Humanitix. We help their developer teams during these critical times by providing the right tools that make their jobs easier, increase productivity and give them the confidence to build quicker and better.

"Today's announcements will be instrumental in helping Australian businesses to accelerate and simplify how they build and innovate. The introduction of a huge number of enhancements, such as time series support and Atlas serverless, are expanding the power and scope of MongoDB's application data platform to help developers solve an even greater range of problems and break down data silos."
