Johanna Konta pulls out of Olympics after positive COVID test
After being removed from Wimbledon last month after one of her team members tested positive for COVID-19, Great Britain's Johanna Konta withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday because she also tested positive for the virus.
Konta, currently No. 38 in the WTA rankings, made the announcement in a post to her Twitter account in what she called a "heart-breaking reality" that she will miss out on her second Olympic Games.
"As some of you know, I was unable to compete at Wimbledon this year after a member of my team tested positive for COVID-19," Konta wrote. "Unfortunately, whilst self-isolating, I also developed symptoms and subsequently tested positive for the virus.
"As a result, I have been unable to train for the last two and a half weeks and sadly, this has put my body in a situation where I am unable to ask it to be fully ready in time for the Olympic Games in Tokyo."
Konta, 30, is the top-rated player from her country and lost in the singles quarterfinals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro to Angelique Kerber of Germany. Konta also reached the second round in doubles and was knocked out in the opening round of mixed doubles in the Brazil Games.
A four-time winner on the WTA Tour, Konta has been a Grand Slam semifinalist on three occasions, most recently at the French Open in 2019. She has reached as high as No. 4 in the WTA in singles, in the summer of 2017.
