Shillong, Jul 13 (UNI) Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the low rate of vaccination was a major concern, even as the overall COVID-19 positivity rate has come down below 10 per cent in the State, except for two districts.
“The big concern for our state remains our vaccination drive, and we are still below the national average in certain cases. We have taken up the vaccination drive on a mission mode,” he said.
“We have asked the MLAs, MDCs and also the civil society leaders and religious leaders to help and contribute towards how we could enhance the vaccination drive and we have seen positive results in the last few days. We are very hopeful that we will see the rates of vaccination go up even higher in the coming weeks and months. If the State can intensify the vaccination drive by up to about 20,000 to 25,000 vaccinations per day, we expect to complete the vaccination of all the eligible population by the end of September or early October,” the Chief Minister said.
“Government of India has been very generous in giving the vaccinations free of cost to all population above the age of 18," he said.
“The Prime Minister has urged all the chief ministers of the North East to lay more focus on the vaccination drive as it is the “only way to beat Covid in the long run”, Sangma said after the virtual meeting with the Prime Minister.
On Tuesday, five deaths due to COVID-19 increased the fatality figure to 918 and 365 new cases added up to 3964 active cases, and 506 recoveries surged the number of recovered cases to 50,336 in Meghalaya, which has registered 55218 confirmed cases so far.
