Gurgaon: Three members of a lift-and-loot
gang active in Delhi-NCR, UP and Rajasthan were arrested by the crime branch of Gurgaon Police on Monday.
The gang used to target people looking for a lift on the Delhi-Jaipur expressway, rob them of valuables, force them to share details of their debit/credit cards and withdraw cash from their accounts.
The accused have been identified as Manoj alias Monu (27), Surender Kumar (35) and Naresh Kumar (32). All of them are originally from Jaipur and were living in a rented accommodation in Rewari’s Bawal, from where they were arrested.
Police said the gang was involved in at least 24 cases of highway robberies in UP, Delhi and Rajasthan. “They used to come to Gurgaon in their Brezza and offer lift to people near the corporate offices on Sohna Road, Udyog Vihar, Sector 17-18, IFFCO Chowk and Rajiv Chowk,” ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said.
He told TOI that the men used to target those wearing gold rings, chains and expensive wrist watches or executives “appearing rich” looking for lifts on the expressway.
Police had formed teams to track the gang after multiple incidents were reported in the past few weeks and nabbed them with the help of technical surveillance and human intelligence. They are now collecting details of such cases registered at various police stations in order to contact the victims.
