VHP objects to one-child norm, says it will lead to population contraction

In a letter to the UP State Law Commission, VHP working president Alok Kumar stated that while they support the aim to stabilise the population by promoting two-child norm, sections 5, 6(2) and 7 of the draft Bill that incentivise public servants and others to have only one child “go well beyond the said objects”.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has asked the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh to remove the one-child policy norm from its draft population control bill, saying it would “likely lead to furthering of the imbalance between different communities” and “contraction of the population”.

“A policy aiming at an average of fewer than two children per woman leads to a contraction of the population over time. Such contraction has several negative social and economic consequences.”
