Sydney Metro has awarded a program-wide project management support contract to a consortium of external consulting firms.
A consortium including infrastructure project management and consultancy Turner & Townsend, Deloitte, and risk consultancy HKA have won the contract to oversee the ambitious Sydney Metro development, which will ultimately include almost 50 stations spread across more than 100 kilometres of track. Logikal, a global projects controls consultancy, will also provide support as a member of the consortium.
Billed as Australia’s biggest public transport project, the initial phase of the automated rapid transport development was approved for construction in 2017, with the Tallawong to Chatswood line the only one operational to date. On completion, scheduled for before the end of the decade, the Sydney Metro will feature four lines covering the city and West Sydney, with capacity to carry around 40,000 commuters per hour.
The project management office support (PMOS) contract awarded to the consortium will continue for up to six years, and cover all of Sydney Metro’s ongoing projects – City & Southwest, Sydney Metro West, Sydney Metro-Western Sydney Airport – as well as feasibility studies into future network expansions. The individual consultancies will work together as part of a mixed team, with over 80 professionals to be assigned across multiple contracts.
“Our combined PMO team will further advance Sydney Metro’s capability, experience and global reputation by co-creating and embedding a world-class and digitally enabled PMO to support the successful delivery of this mega program of works,” said Darren Munton, Turner & Townsend’s Head of Infrastructure for Australia and New Zealand, who cited a successful working relationship extending back to Sydney Metro’s inception.
Established in the UK in 1946 and headquartered in Leeds, Turner & Townsend has since the early 80s grown to an international workforce in excess of 6,500 employees spread across 100+ offices in 45 countries worldwide. The professional services firm serves the infrastructure, real estate and natural resources sectors, with nine offices across Australia. Other local projects include Snowy Hydro, Inland Rail, and the new Sydney Fish Market.
Another member of the consortium, HKA, has also been working on the Sydney Metro program since its inception, having broken from Hill International during that time. HKA was also recently appointed as Integration and Delivery Partner for Sydney Metro’s Western Sydney Airport line under a six-year contract alongside SNC-Lavalin. The firm has a more than four-decade history with 40 offices worldwide, including four in Australia.
