In Jan, board schools took exception to the state’s move to cap fees at not more than 70% of that levied in the preceding year
BENGALURU: The state government is empowered to decide the fee structure of CBSE schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is believed to have communicated to the commissioner of public instruction, Karnataka. Commissioner, public instruction, V Anbukumar, however, said he is yet to see the hard copy of the July 9 letter from CBSE. “I can comment only when I see the letter,” Anbukumar said. A copy of the CBSE letter is doing the rounds on social media. However, he said he had written to the board in March, seeking clarity whether regulation of fees falls under the ambit of the state government. The state’s move to seek clarification came in the wake of schools affiliated to central boards like CBSE resenting its diktat to cap the fees for 2020-21 at not more than 70% of that levied during the preceding year (2019-20). In its communication, the CBSE quoted its affiliation bylaws 2018 to say that the acts and rules of state governments to regulate fees is applicable to CBSE schools too.
