India at Tokyo Olympics – Indian athletes at Olympics: Apart from Norman Pritchard, who had won two silver medals in the 1900 Paris Olympics representing India, there’s nothing much to show for India in the athletics medals table. On several occasions, Indian athletes have come closer to winning a medal but have never finished on the podium. It’s been over a century now, but the two medals won in the 1900 Paris Olympics remain India’s only athletics medals at Olympics.

Jabir M Palliyalil

Jabir M Palliyalil will be representing India in the 400m hurdles event at the Tokyo Olympics. He has a personal best of 49.13, which he ran at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championship in Doha. The 25-years-old qualified through the World ranking quota where there were 14 spots available and became the first Indian male athlete to qualify for the 400m hurdles in Olympics.

Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Noah Nirmal Tom, Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv and Naganathan Pandi

Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Noah Nirmal Tom, Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv and Naganathan Pandi will be representing India in the men’s 4x400m relay event at Tokyo Olympics. With an effort of 3:01.89 seconds in the National Inter-state Athletics championship at the National Institute of sports, the men’s team rose to 13th position out of the total 16 teams qualified for the Olympics.

Sandeep Kumar

Sandeep Kumar will be representing India in the 20km Race walking event at the Tokyo Olympics. He holds the national record in this event with a timing of 1:20:16, which he achieved at the Indian Race Walking Championships held in Ranchi. With his national record effort in Ranchi, he qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. After the 2016 Rio Olympics, this will be his second Olympic appearance.

Rahul Rohila

Rahul Rohila will be representing India in the 20km Race walking event at the Tokyo Olympics. He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by winning the silver medal in the 20-km men’s race in 1:20:26 during the National Open Race Walking Competition held at Ranchi. This timing of 1:20:26 is his personal best.

Irfan Kolothum Thodi

Irfan Kolothum Thodi will be representing India in the 20km Race walking event at the Tokyo Olympics. Irfan finished 10th in the 2012 London Olympics, and he also qualified for the Rio Olympics but did not participate due to a stress fracture. For Tokyo Olympics, he was the first Indian athlete to qualify when he finished fourth at the Asian Race Walking Championship in Naomi, Japan, with timing of 1:20:57.

Gurpreet Singh

Gurpreet Singh will be representing India in the 20km Race walking event at the Tokyo Olympics. He has a personal best of 3:59:42, which he achieved in Ranchi in February this year and qualified for the Olympics based on his world ranking, currently ranked 104 in the world.

Avinash Sable

Avinash Sable will be representing India in the 3000 meters steeplechase event at the Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic cut-off was set at 8.22, and he qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with a timing of 8:21.37 at the 2019 World Athletics Championship in Doha. The 26-years-old holds the national record timing of 8:20.20, which he achieved at the Federation Cup in Patiala 2021.

Dutee Chand

Dutee Chand will be representing India in the 100m and 200m events at the Tokyo Olympics. She holds the national record timing of 11.17 seconds in 100m events. The 25-years-old sprinter failed to breach the qualification mark of both 100m and 200m set for the Tokyo Olympics but still managed to qualify based on her World rankings. After the 2016 Rio Olympics, this will be her second Olympics appearance.

Priyanka Goswami

Priyanka Goswami will be representing India in the 20km Race Walking event at the Tokyo Olympics. She recently created a national record with a timing of 1:28:45 at the National Race Walking Championships held in Ranchi and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.

Bhawna Jat

Bhawna Jat will be representing India in the 20km Race Walking event at the Tokyo Olympics. The qualification standards for Tokyo Olympics were set at 1:31:00, and she qualified for the Olympics by finishing with a timing of 1:29:54 at the National Open championship in February 2020. This qualifying time also happens to be the previous national record in this event.

Sarthak Bhambri, Alex Anthony, Revathi Veeramani, Subha Venkatesan and Dhanalakshmi Sekhar

Sarthak Bhambri, Alex Anthony, Revathi Veeramani, Subha Venkatesan and Dhanalakshmi Sekhar will be representing India in mixed 4x400m relay. The mixed 4×400 relay team was one of the first teams to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics after their amazing 2019 World Athletic Championship performance. Since it happened long ago, the Athletic Federation of India (AFI) decided to conduct a trial at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala and selected these five athletes.

Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra will be representing India in the men’s javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics. He holds the national record of 88.07m which he threw at the federation cup in Patiala 2021. The throw of 88.07m is the season’s sixth-best in the javelin throw event and is expected to win a medal for India at Tokyo Olympics.

Shivpal Singh

Shivpal Singh will be representing India in the men’s javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics. In March 2020, the 26-years-old threw a distance of 85.47m in South Africa to qualify for the Olympics. He has a personal best throw of 86.23, achieved at the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha.

Murali Sreeshankar

Murali Sreeshankar will be representing India in the men’s long jump event at the Tokyo Olympics. The qualification mark for the Tokyo Olympics was set at 8.22, and he qualified for the Olympics with a jump of 8.26m at the Federation Cup in Patiala in March. His jump of 8.26m also happens to be the national record in this event.

Tajinderpal Toor Singh

Tajinderpal Toor Singh will be representing India in the men’s shot put event at the Tokyo Olympics. The qualification mark for the Tokyo Olympics was set at 21.10m, and he qualified for the Olympics by throwing 21.49m at the Indian Grand Prix IV on 21 June 2021. His throw of 21.49m is both National and Asian records.

Kamalpreet Kaur

Kamalpreet Kaur will be representing India in the women’s discus throw event at the Tokyo Olympics. At the federation cup in Patiala, the Olympics qualification mark was set at 63.5m, but she threw the discus much longer at a distance of 63.05 and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. In 2021, she created a national record with a throw of 66.59m at the Indian Grand Prix 4 event at Patiala, 2021.

Seema Punia

Seema Punia will be representing India in the women’s discus throw event at the Tokyo Olympics. With the Olympics qualification mark set at 63.5, she recorded a throw of 63.72m on the last day of the inter-state meet in Patiala to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. The throw of 63.72m also happens to be her personal best.

Annu Rani

Annu Rani will be representing India in the women’s javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics. She failed to breach the Olympic qualification mark set at 64m but will qualify for the Olympics through World ranking as she is comfortably sitting at 11th position in the world ranking of women’s javelin throwers. Her personal best throw of 63.24m is also the national record in this event.

1900 Paris Olympics

Norman Pritchard was the lone athlete from India at the 1900 Paris Olympics. He didn’t win one but two silver medals in athletic competitions, 200m and 200m hurdles. There is a debate surrounding who is the first Indian to win an Olympic medal, should it be before independence or after-independent. Putting all those doubts to rest, the Indian Olympic committee recognizes him as the first Indian to win an Olympic medal.
