The HIA's handling capacity to increase to 5mn tonnes per year
The multi-phased expansion of Hamad International Airport (HIA) will see the construction of a new cargo terminal that will increase its handling capacity to up to 5mn tonnes per year, according to the HIA’s latest fact sheet.
The state-of-the-art terminal is slated to be ready by 2023, stated the fact sheet, adding that the three-level facility will have an 85,000sq m building footprint, and three mezzanine levels providing approximately 323,000sq m of gross floor area (GFA).
In terms of sustainability, the HIA, a landmark in international aviation, continues to showcase its commitment to environmental sustainability, according to the fact sheet.
With its new central concourse, concourses D & E expansion, north node lounges, and hotel, the new Al Mourjan lounge, and the remote transfer baggage facility building targeting a minimum 3-stars under the GSAS sustainability rating system, the HIA will be the first airport in the region and the world to achieve the GSAS certification.
The central concourse and concourses D & E are aiming to achieve LEED Silver, a globally-recognised Green Building certification.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and GSAS (Global Sustainability Assessment System) are third-party “green” building certifications developed by US Green Building Council (USGBC) and by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD), and administered by the Green Business Certification Incorporated (GBCI) and GSAS Trust, respectively.
The HIA is working with its supply chain in all expansion packages to ensure that equipment procured is contemporary and efficient for lifetime operational benefits.
