Officials from Greater Chennai Corporation have collected Rs 5 lakh fine in two days from commercial complexes for violating standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the government to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The corporation along with police formed nine special monitoring teams along with police for inspections and found 64 shops that did not follow the SOPs. They collected Rs 1.4 lakh fine from the shops. While Rs 2 lakh were collected on Friday, Rs 3.3 lakh was collected in fines on Saturday. So far, the corporation has collected Rs 3.3 crore from individuals and companies for violating Covid norms.

Veeranam lake to get water within a week
The Veeranam lake in Cuddalore district, one of the water sources for Chennai city, is expected to receive inflows by next week. A senior public works department (PWD) official said the lake had reached dead storage level in mid-April and since then repair work was begun. With water from the Mettur reservoir expected to arrive soon, officials are expediting the work. It will be halted temporarily, said the official.
