CHENNAI: A 37-year-old teacher, who had reported to police the illegal sale of liquor in his neighbourhood, was attacked by the accused bootlegger at Otteri on Saturday night.
The victim, Jane De monte, 37, is a teacher at a private school in the neighbourhood. Police said Jane had filed a complaint against Rajesh Kumar, 39, for selling liqour illegally from his house. Based on the complaint, police had raided Rajesh's house and warned him to stop the illegal sale. Police believe Rajesh came to know about Jane's complaint.
On Saturday, Jane was walking near his home when Rajesh, in a drunk state, intercepted him. He picked up an argument with Jane saying the latter ruined his life and started taunting Jane, asking why he reported him to police. "He warned Jane to not do report him in the future, then picked up a stone from the ground and attacked Jane until a passerby came to his rescue," a police officer said. Jane was rushed to a private hospital, where he was given first aid and his condition was said to be stable. Police arrested Rajesh. He was remanded in judicial custody.
