Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Varanasi on Thursday to inaugurate projects worth more than ₹400 crore. It will be his first visit to his constituency this year but Modi is expected to cover UP geographically to inaugurate different projects in the next 100 days in the runup to the state assembly elections early next year, according to UP government insiders.

On Thursday, Modi is likely to address a public meeting in Varanasi where he would emphasise on the development agenda of the state government. Modi will also inaugurate the Rudraksh Convention Centre constructed with the aid of the Japanese government in Varanasi. He is also scheduled to remotely inaugurate nine medical colleges in nine districts.

BJP president JP Nadda had last month met several Union ministers and queried about projects in poll-bound states and tentative completion schedules to arrange for their inauguration before the code of conduct for the 2022 assembly elections comes into effect.

BJP wants to move ahead with a development narrative for the polls and inaugurations would set the stage for it. The CM’s Purvanchal Expressway connecting Lucknow and Ghazipur is nearing completion and Modi is expected to inaugurate it after August 15. He will visit Gorakhpur in October to inaugurate AIIMS and a fertiliser plant, two big promises made during his election rallies in the region. In 2016, Modi had laid the foundation stone for projects in Gorakhpur. The fertiliser plant is supposed to create 4,000 jobs.
