Though England scored the first goal, Italy made a comeback in the second half, and with the score at 1-1, the game went to extra time. It was still level and went to penalties; it was Italy who was crowned champions in the end.
"Heartbreaking," Prince William later said on social media, before congratulating Italy on "a great victory".
Following the result, the Duke of Cambridge held onto Prince George's shoulders as the young royal appeared disappointed.
William shared a few words with the English team, however. "@England, you've all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn't our day," he said. "You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there's more to come."
