Surat: Valsad police on Saturday arrested an auto-rickshaw driver who killed his estranged wife. The two had been living separately for the last six years. Angry over the victim’s refusal to come back to him,
the accused killed her,
police said.Police said that the killer Punit Mitna followed his wife Mamta (30) and killed her when she was on way to her uncle’s home in Umargam late on Thursday night. Mamta’s father Dalpat lodged a murder case against his son-in-law at Umargam Marine police station on Friday. Dalpat claimed that just before dying Mamta told him that Mitna had slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times.
According to Dalpat, Mamta had left her husband around six years ago as Mitna used to harass her over suspicions of infidelity. Tired of the daily torment, Mamta had returned to her parents’ home with her children. Dalpat told police that Mitna often came to their house and tried to convince Mamta to return to him, but she always refused.
On Thursday night, when Mamta was going to her uncle Dhansukh’s home, Mitna followed her and attacked her near Sutharfaliya Road. After slitting her throat, he stabbed her before fleeing. Locals informed Dalpat about the attack following which Mamta was taken to a hospital in Bhilad from where she was referred to another hospital in Vapi.
She succumbed to injuries during treatment at the hospital in Vapi. Police said that before dying when her parents asked her, Mamta told them that Mitna had attacked her. “We have arrested him, but are yet to interrogate him about how he committed the crime and about the murder weapon,” said a police official.
