AHMEDABAD: City crime branch on Saturday arrested one Irfan Hasmullah Khan, 36, for the murder of a woman whose body was disposed of in the overhead water tank of a garment factory at Mohan Estate in Khokhra.
Crime branch officials said Irfan had an illicit relationship with the woman, Rekha Jayesh, for over 15 years. She recently entered a relationship with another person.
On Tuesday, Khokhra police found the body hidden in a moulded polythene water tank on the third floor of a garment factory. The postmortem revealed the woman had been stabbed to death. She was later identified and found to be a resident of Amraiwadi. Khan lived in the same neighbourhood as her.
Crime branch officials said the investigation was under way when they received information that Khan was at a tea stall in Amraiwadi and he was involved in the murder at Khokhra. He was nabbed and on interrogation, confessed to having murdered Rekha.
Rekha was married and had children. She and Khan had been in a relationship for over 15 years. Khan told police that he trusted Rekha and had given her Rs 2 lakh in 2019, which she used up. He had also recently learned that she was in a relationship with another person. This angered him and he murdered her after heated arguments.
Crime branch officials said on Sunday Khan had called Rekha to meet him and the two had an argument after which he strangled and then stabbed her. He then dumped the body in the water tank, which was full.
Police said as he knew her family would call her, Khan took both of Rekha’s mobiles. After his arrest, investigators recovered both phones.
