The union territory of Puducherry is set to reopen schools for students in classes 9-12 from July 16. Colleges in the UT will also be reopened on the same day.

Chief Minister N Rangaswamy said, "All schools for students in classes 9-12 will reopen from July 16. All colleges will also be reopened from July 16," according to reports from ANI.

Meanwhile, the union territory added 145 new COVID-19 cases while no fresh fatality was recorded in the last 24 hours, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said on Sunday.

This was the first time that no coronavirus related fatality was reported in a single day after more than six months, he said. The death toll stood at 1,769 as of July 10.

The 145 fresh cases were detected at the end of the examination of 5,821 samples during the last 24 hours ending 10 AM Sunday, he added.

He said the cumulative caseload stood at 1,18,976.

The test positivity rate in the last 24 hours was 2.49 per cent while fatality and recovery rates were 1.49 per cent and 97.25 per cent respectively.

The Health department Director said the number of active cases stood at 1,505 with 251 in hospitals and the remaining 1,254 in home isolation.

As many as 13.85 lakh samples have been tested so far and it was found that 11.83 lakh of them were negative.

While 213 patients recovered and were discharged in the last 24 hours, the total recoveries was 1,15,702.

The Health department Director said that 37,525 healthcare workers and 22,933 frontline workers have been vaccinated so far.

He said that 4.18 lakh people coming under the category of either senior citizens or those above 45 years with comorbidities have been inoculated since March 1.

The Director said that 5.85 lakh people have so far been covered under vaccination which included those who have received the second dose
