MUMBAI: Following the lead of market leader Amul, Gokul and Mother Dairy have also raised the price of milk by Rs 2 per litre. The hike comes into effect from July 11.
Amul had raised milk prices by Rs 2 on July 1 citing increased input costs like energy, packaging and logistics.
On Saturday, Mother Dairy said that procurement cost of milk from dairy farmers has gone up by 8-10% in the last one year. Other operational costs have also risen, necessitating the retail hike.
However, the head of
Maharashtra's dairy major Gokul milk cooperative Satej Patil, who is also minister of state for home, attributed the price rise to a hike in procurement costs. Buffalo milk has been increased from Rs 58 to Rs 60, cow milk from Rs 47 to Rs 49.
A press release issued by Gokul on Saturday said it was ameliorating the fortunes of its dairy farmers. “As assured soon after being elected to the board of the Kolhapur District Co-Operative Milk Producers' Union, which owns Gokul, we have announced a hike in procurement price by Rs 2 for buffalo milk and Re 1 for cow milk from July 11. Lakhs of farmers will benefit from the increased rate,” it said.
It said, “We collect 12 lakh litres of milk every day from across the state. Except for Kolhapur, Sangli and Konkan division there will be a rise in the selling price of milk.”
