BHUBANESWAR: Activists on Wednesday urged the state government to procure a tree transplanting machine in the state to transplant trees instead of cutting it for developmental projects.
They have also requested the government to stop cutting trees mindlessly.
On the last day of the Van Mahotsav, activist Susanta Kumar Sahoo had requested chief minister Naveen Patnaik to take proactive steps for conservation of trees which are lungs of the state. He had written messages on a wall known as ‘Green Wall’ and publicised it through different mediums.
“Cyclone prone Odisha needs a new transplanting machine because we want to create a world where the environment does not need protection. Save trees for a better future,” read the message written on the Green Wall.
Sahoo said climate change has posed a challenge for humanity. “Odisha has witnessed natural calamities like cyclones and floods most of the time. We should try to save the trees damaged during the cyclone. The major problem is cutting trees mindlessly for different development projects. We don’t oppose development works, but we can adopt some changes which will benefit the environment,” he added.
Like Sahoo, other activists have put emphasis on procurement of a tree transplanting machine and saving the trees from cutting. Many foreign countries and Indian states are using this machine for transplanting trees, that’s why the Odisha government should consider this request, they added.
