Ghaziabad: A 29-year-old man
out on parole in a case of fraud came home drunk and found his parents fighting among themselves. He whipped out a country-made pistol and shot his father in the chest, killing him on the spot.
Shivam Chanana then called up police and said he wanted to surrender. The alleged
murder took place on Thursday night at
Devika Skypers in Raj Nagar Extension, where the 29-year-old accused lived with his parents and younger brother Rahul.
Police said both the
brothers, who worked as supervisors at a factory in
Sihani Gate, were arrested a few months ago in connection with a Rs 10 lakh fraud in their office. They got parole during the lockdown, when several jails were emptied so that Covid did not spread among prisoners.
“On Thursday night, Shivam came home drunk and saw his father and mother fighting. He tried to pacify them, but to no avail. After a while, he pulled out a gun from his pocket and shot his father in the chest. As he slumped to the ground, he waited for around 10 minutes before dialing the police. He told the cops he had killed his father and wanted to surrender,” a police officer said.
It was around 11pm that the police control room at Sihani Gate got a call from Shivam. “The cop who took the call was shocked,” said Avnish Kumar, the circle officer of Sihani Gate.
Shivam’s brother, Rahul, lodged a complaint, following which an FIR under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC was registered at Nandgram police station. Shivam was arrested from his flat. He was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.
According to police, fights were common in the Chanana household. Shivam’s father, Sanjay, had developed a habit of drinking ever since he wound up his business five years ago because of losses. He would not come home for days, which often led to quarrels with his wife. Just three days ago, Sanjay had allegedly picked up a fight with his sons and even beat up Rahul.
“Shivam told police everyone in his family was disturbed because of his father. He would not come home for days and fight with everyone. On Thursday, when Shivam reached home, he saw his father shouting at his mother. In a fit of rage, he pulled out the gun and fired a bullet into his father’s chest. He died on the spot,” the police officer said..
