CHANDIGARH: The city will get its second material recovery facilitation centre in a couple of weeks. The Rs 10-crore ambitious project of the civic body will be at Industrial Area, Phase I, near
CTU workshop. The centre will segregate the collected garbage from residential and commercial areas of around dozen sectors and from the areas in Manimajra and
Mauli Jagran.
A total of three such centres have to come up in the city at different locations. The first one was inaugurated by Punjab governor and UT administrator VP Singh Badnore at 3BRD last month. The third centre will be at Sector 25 near the garbage processing plant, but it will take some more time.
Around 150 twin-bin garbage collecting vehicles will collect waste from their respective areas and bring the collected garbage to the centre at Industrial Area, Phase I. Here, dry and wet garbage will be segregated through a mechanical system. After that the wet and dry waste would be separately loaded in the big canters at the centre and taken to the garbage processing plant.
“Instead of 150 door-to-door garbage collecting vehicles, only 8 big canters will go to the garbage processing plant to process the entire generated garbage of the around dozen sectors, Manimajra and Mauli Jagran, avoiding any kind of rush of vehicles. Moreover, after doing the work, all 150 vehicles will be parked in an adjoining area. A dedicated parking area will also be provided here,” an official said.
The concept and construction of the centres in Chandigarh is a part of the
Solid Waste Management in the city, which the municipal corporation has told about to
National Green Tribunal too. The function and monitoring of all three centres will be done by the
sanitation department of the civic body.
The cost of all the three centres is estimated to be Rs 31 crore. The Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) has constructed the project, while the MC would run these centres.
