New Delhi, July 9

Senior TMC leader Mukul Roy, who recently switched over to the ruling camp in West Bengal after winning the Assembly polls on a BJP ticket, was on Friday appointed as the chairperson of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the Assembly by Speaker Biman Banerjee.

The post is normally given to opposition MLAs. Roy fulfills this pre-condition as he is officially a BJP legislator. Despite returning to the TMC fold, he did not resign as an MLA. BJP MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, staged a walkout from the Assembly, protesting Roy’s appointment.

Roy, MLA from Krishnanagar Uttar, re-joined the TMC last month in the presence of party supremo Mamata Banerjee and her political successor Abhishek Banerjee, MP.

A founding member of the TMC, Mukul had left the party in November 2017 to join the BJP.

Adhikari said an opposition MLA was usually appointed as the chairman.
