Ludhiana: The district has recorded the lowest weekly Covid casualty count in the past one year. One death was reported from July 2 to July 8, according to the state health department report. The count was 83.3% more in the preceding week (June 25 to July 1), when the disease claimed six lives. Eleven residents succumbed to the virus between June 18 and 24; 17 between June 11 and 17; 41 from June 4 to 10; 68 from May 28 to June 3; 131 between May 21 and 27; 151 during May 14 to 20; record 174 from May 7 to 13. On the state chart in weekly Covid fatality figure, Ludhiana shares 17th spot with Tarn Taran, Patiala and SBS Nagar. Mansa is at the top with 13 deaths, Bathinda is second (8) and Amritsar and Hoshiarpur third (7). No deaths were reported from Ropar and Barnala. District epidemiologist Dr Ramesh Bhagat said, “The number of new cases has been on the decline. Deaths are directly proportional to new cases and are therefore on the downswing.” “Despite the falling numbers, people must follow Covid-appropriate behaviour, so that cases don’t increase,” said former SMO Dr Rajinder Gulati.
